Dear MIT Sloan alumni –

I write to share the sad news of the passing of Dean Emeritus Abraham Siegel. He leaves behind his wife, Lil, three children, and many grandchildren.

News of Abe’s passing has allowed many to reflect on his extraordinary service to the MIT Sloan School of Management and his dedication to our community. Abe joined MIT in 1954 as an Instructor in the Department of Economics. In 1964 he became a Professor of Industrial Relations, with a dual appointment at MIT Sloan and the Department of Economics. After 13 years as Associate Dean under Dean Emeritus Bill Pounds, Abe became Dean of the MIT Sloan School in June, 1981. Abe served as dean for six years of strategic growth.

As he began his tenure he publicly referred to MIT Sloan as a “jewel of a School” and he polished that jewel in many ways that have had a lasting impact. Abe hired the School’s first director of alumni relations and his commitment to building an energized and committed alumni community extended to the publishing of the first alumni magazine as well as the growth of alumni programming across the country. Our community can see the results of Abe’s vision in our current Office of External Relations, our alumni magazine, MIT Sloan, and in the varied ways our alumni support our mission.

Abe also oversaw an unprecedented rejuvenation in our physical plant. In just a few short years the Sloan building was renovated; the bridge between E52 and 70 Memorial Drive was built; and classroom space expanded significantly as did space allocated for major research centers. Abe’s vision for a vibrant East Campus has been an inspiration to the deans who came after him, propelling us toward the new and vibrant spaces we occupy as a School.

Finally, the landscape of our faculty and degree programming was greatly influenced by Abe. He envisioned and oversaw the reorganization of our faculty into the three areas within which we still work – Behavioral and Policy Science; Applied Economics, Finance and Accounting; and Management Science. Conversations he initiated with the School of Engineering around efficiency and effectiveness of complicated manufacturing processes presaged and helped promote the Leaders for Global Operations program. Abe’s foresight led to one of the most compelling illustrations of the dynamic, unique, and powerful cross-campus collaborations possible only at MIT.

Some who knew him best have shared that in his passion for MIT Sloan Abe was like a father to our community and indeed, that is how he shall be remembered.

Best wishes,

Dave Schmittlein

John C Head III Dean

Dear MIT Club Presidents and MIT10 Coordinators,

This year’s annual Toast to IAP event will be particularly special as it will serve as the kickoff for a series of regional events, occurring January through June 2011, to celebrate MIT’s 150th Celebration. The MIT Alumni Association’s Toast to IAP program involves fun, easy to plan social cocktail hours – coordinated by our global alumni groups on or around the same date in January in honor of IAP (Independent Activities Period.) While the program was originally designed with the intent of engaging the MIT10 population (undergrad and grad student alike, 0-10 years out), we encourage many of our smaller or international clubs to advertise the event to your entire constituencies. Join the MIT camaraderie and get your club involved!

The Alumni Association provides:
- Basic favors and signs
- Content for a few IAP style games or activities
- Collection of any fee/pre-registration associated with an event on behalf of a Club (via SmarTrans)
-A Web site with details on each location

Club Responsibilities:
- Advertise the event via their newsletters and email lists
- Book a suitable venue and plan for covering costs for the event (should not be many costs; encourage cash bar)
- Execute IAP style games and activities

There are many additional ways in which your group can participate in MIT’s sesquicentennial festivities. You can get involved by organizing or attending events regionally or virtually. Here are the engagement opportunities available to you:

MIT150 Regional Events:

Toast to IAP—January 19: MIT grads of the last 10 years gather at local watering holes to ignite the spirit of Independent Activities Period and kick off MIT’s anniversary celebration, with mingling and irreverent party games.

MIT Global Challenge: Now through May : A competition that invites MIT community members and their collaborators to create inventions that improve life. Teams will share ideas and progress via social media; winning projects will be implemented globally.

Charter Day Convocation—April 10: The MIT150 centerpiece that commemorates the signing of MIT’s charter and celebrates the scholarly accomplishments of MIT faculty and students. Attend in person or host a viewing site or gathering of local alumni.

Day of Service—January through June: A way to honor MIT’s commitment to service and give back to local communities. Organize or participate in a project crafted especially for your locale.

Start your regional celebration of MIT’s 150th Anniversary by participating in the Toast to IAP program! Last year there were 52 global locations – representing over 50% of our regional groups – , and we would love to engage 100% of our clubs this year to honor MIT’s 150th! We certainly hope you’ll participate again this year!

Step one to celebrating MIT’s 150th is to write back to confirm your group’s participation in a Toast to IAP event and to let us know who is coordinating the event for your group. Please let us know if you plan to participate by Friday, November 5, 2010. We will be in touch with your Toast to IAP coordinator with additional details regarding the program.

And, watch your email and bookmark this website, http://mit150.mit.edu/ , for updates in the next few weeks on the MIT 150th Celebration and details on supporting materials for Charter Day and Day of Service events. Please note that Toast to IAP event boxes will not be mailed until the beginning of January. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
